| 06.29.05 | Drawing Retreat 2005 The IPA/SI DRAWING RETREAT, AUTUMN 2005 New York City †††Oct. 7 ñ Oct. 10, 2005 The Society of Illustrators, 128 East 63rd Street Attendance limited to 100 FEE: $300 IPA/SOI Members: †$250 Students: $200 Limited to 20 The Illustrators' Partnership invites you to join us for our second Drawing Retreat, held in association with the Society of Illustrators this fall in New York City. Join your colleagues and peers for three days of daytime life drawing at the SI building on 63rd Street and on drawing sessions at various locations throughout Americaís most dynamic city. †Share your evenings talking shop and socializing at the Society of Illustrators' bar and dining room, following Town Hall discussions on several of our industry's most pertinent issues. † The Society of Illustrators provides the ideal setting for an urban retreat. The New York Times recently published an article "Nudes on Stage, and Music to Sketch By" (New York Times April 26, 2005): "Some flocked to a small, noisy bar in the front, others to a rollicking party spilling out into a rear garden. The drinks flowed freely, and a jazz band struck up a lively blues number. A couple near the bar began swing dancing...The people in this group -- about 50 illustrators, from college students to retirees -- were sharpening their skills by drawing the women, who were figure models. The artists were poised over pads and easels. Some tapped their feet or swayed to the music, but kept sketching rapidly in pencil, ink, pastels or charcoal. The session was organized by the Society of Illustrators, a century-old organization whose home is the town house at 128 East 63rd Street. Sketching nudes is nothing new at the society.." Besides this historic setting with paintings by Rockwell, Wyeth and Parrish, we'll take drawing excursions to the Fulton Street Market, Central Park, Grand Central Station and the Lower East Side. Evenings will include Town Hall sessions to discuss the state of our industry and following that, weíll socialize. †We hope you'll join us as we discuss the world of illustration in the autumn of New York City. † Illustrator Drawing Hosts include: Brad Holland, CF Payne, John Howard, Tim O'Brien, Victor Juhasz, Tim Bower, Lynn Pauley and Robert Jay Kaufman. Sessions will include indoor drawing at SI and outdoor sketch excursions throughout the city. Talks and Presentations include: †† ï Robert Jay Kaufman, author/illustrator of "Blockology: An Offbeat Walking Guide to Lower Manhattan." "The tale of his trek is the ultimate love letter to the city." †The New York Times, 4/17/05 ï Andrew Berger, Esq., experienced copyright attorney (Tannenbaum, Helpern, Syracuse & Hirschtritt) and author of the column ìLegal News You Can Use,î will explain how to protect your copyrights and answer your questions. †† ï Frank Costantino, internationally prominent†architectural artist and cofounder of the international American Society of Architectural Illustrators (ASAI), will discuss†a slide presentation of his work that focuses on the aesthetic†of architectural design representation. ï Orphan Works Update: Over 1,500 artists and 42 international art organizations backed the IPAís proposal to the U.S. Copyright Office contesting the effort by Free Culture advocates to weaken copyright. With the government conducting hearings later this summer, IPA will bring artists up-to-date on this timely issue. ï IPA Town Halls: Retreat participants will have the opportunity to discuss the most immediate industry developments first hand with other professionals in a setting that underscores the long history of our traditions and impact on American culture. The idea behind the IPA Retreat is to get away from the pressures of business for a few days and focus on what makes us artists. Because real inspiration is a hands-on process, we've found that several days of concentrated drawing in a relaxed setting stimulates creativity and revives the sense of enthusiasm for art that we often lose amidst deadlines and business details. And by fostering a sense of community, we've found it easier to share ideas and experiences that affect the way we think and work. This is what many participants discovered at our last retreat in Solitude Utah, and by bringing the IPA Retreat back east, we hope to provide a similar opportunity to renew our imaginations. The full schedule will follow shortly. †In the interim, for more information or to register, call the IPA office at: 1-781/837-9152 or email:info@illustratorspartnership.org" |
